Terminator Genisys film informatics Part 10: Non-Humanoid HKs

Non-Humanoid Hunter-Killers are robots that don't have the shape of a human body or skeleton of any kind, but intsead resemble vehicles. These machines were developed for combat.
Several machines where developed and created by Cyberdyne Systems, Cyber Research Systems, or Skynet.


HK AERIAL
An HK-Aerial is referred to a wide variety of Skynet's large airborne VTOL-capable Non-Humanoid Hunter Killer. Derived from the original HK-Drone, it retains the form and maneuver system but on a much larger scale. With wingspans of up to 108 feet and a devastating array of under-slung and wing mounted lasers, missiles, and plasma cannons, the HK-Aerial is fearsome and terrifying to behold.
Often operating in support of ground sweeps by swarms of Series 800 Endoskeletons, they are one of the more dangerous targets for the members of the Resistance to engage. HK-Aerials can be brought down by shoulder fired surface to air missiles.


HK DRONE (T-4 AERIAL)
The HK-Drone, also known as T-4 Aerial is designed by Cyberdyne Research Systems to be an unmanned aerial weapons systems which the organization was attempting to market to various military powers prior to 2004. As thousands were produced, when Skynet came on line, it immediately had access to a small army of sophisticated tactical air craft. One setback is that it has difficulty discerning a non living object from a living one. To it, anything warm and moving is a target.


T-1
The Series 1 Terminator, also known as T-1, is the first Terminator class robot to be produced by Cyber Research Systems. Designed for extreme combat, the Series 1 was built to clear battlefields of enemy troops with its powerful weaponry.
The T-1 was originally built in limited numbers, each individually numbered and stored under individual anti-static dust coverings. Cyberdyne created this first-generation fully autonomous ground offensive system in 2003 as part of their program to re-create the work of the late Dr. Miles Dyson. The design of the HK-Tank was an evolution of the T-1, while the concept of T-835 may originate from the T-1.


HK TANK
The Hunter Killer Tank is one of Skynet's Non-Humanoid Hunter Killers as a principal ground-based combat vehicle. Developed from the original T-1, the HK-Tank is several stories tall and vaguely humanoid in overall shape, possessing a rotating, conning tower-like "head", two steel "arms" equipped with twin-barreled directional plasma cannons, and two legs" consisting of massive individual tank treads. While formidably armed, the HK-Tank can be easily destroyed by a well-placed demolition charge.
With the increase of effective anti-HK tactics used by the Resistance to not only disable these units but to scavenge them for heavy weapons, power sources, and armor, Skynet has started equipping some units with crew compartments, containing concealed endoskeletons to counterattack the human assault teams.


AEROSTATS
Aerostats are a type of Non-Humanoid Hunter Killer produced by Skynet sometime before 2018. They are scout units that survey the land and the Resistance by air. Aerostats sends signals to Harvesters.


T-7T TETRAPOD
The T-7T Tetrapod, also known as "Spider" by the Resistance, is a Skynet Terminator series and quadruped HKs used to defend key points of interest for Skynet. They resemble the HK-Centurion in some aspects, as the legs and general shape.
The Tetrapod has crab-like upper body, twin machine guns as its arms and four arthropod legs. It is often accompanied with a swarm of tiny hovering Aerostats. Though heavily armored, they are vulnerable from behind by targeting their battery packs, or from the front via their single red eye. However, shooting the red eye will only deactivate the unit for a short period of time.


HYDROBOT
A Hydrobot is a Non-Humanoid Hunter Killer unit produced by Skynet sometime before 2018. It features a serpent-like structure with a claw at their head. It is used to patrol the waters. The Hydrobot is based on the present day model of Skynet Research's Aquatic WorkBot, which was used to maintain kelp and seaweed, find minerals and oil, and seek out organic matter.
As the name implies, a Hydrobot has difficulty operating on land, but they could jump incredible distances and use their metal teeth to cut through even metal.


HARVESTER
The Harvester is a large bipedal Non-Humanoid Hunter Killer unit produced by Skynet sometime before 2016. Its primary function is to capture the humans to do lab testing on their stem cells. This research on humans led to the creation of the Series 800 Terminator.
When a Harvester has captured any human test subject, it calls a Transport, which arrives and lands somewhere near the Harvester. After a Harvester has collected the humans, it drops the humans into the large container on the Transport.


MOTO-TERMINATORS
Moto-Terminators are automated motorcycles, produced by Skynet sometime before 2018, whose main purpose is to hunt down humans. Two of these are stored in the lower legs of a Harvester and released to round up fleeing humans and make them easier to capture. The Moto-Terminators are seen to possess incredible agility, with the sensors calculating debris or obstacles ahead, even viewing them in slow motion. With this trait, they easily avoid any obstacle, such as a car wreckage.


TRANSPORT
A Transport is a large flying Non-Humanoid Hunter Killer that transport humans to Skynet Work Camps. As large VTOL-style craft, the transport is also capable of carrying a Harvester and at least two HK-Aerials.

Terminator Genisys film informatics Part 09: Humanoid Terminators

Hunter-Killers (HKs) are artificially intelligent autonomous war machines built in automated factories. They comprise the majority of the "soldiers" in Skynet's army. Many are similar in overall form to the war machines of today (tanks, aircraft) while others are humanoid endoskeletons.

HUMANOID HUNTER KILLER UNITS
Humanoid Hunter Killer Units, also known as Terminators, are androids developed and intended to be similar to a human endoskeleton in appearance and function.
Skynet studied the human body, and used that knowledge to create the Infiltrators, machines that look and behave more like real humans with real skin, so they could infiltrate the Resistance.
A number of Terminator series have been released over the years. Some series have sub-series which are basically an improved version of the original series. Sometimes, the fuel system is upgraded or the CPU is replaced with a more advanced chip. Further divergent timelines show evidence of additional advanced, increasingly organic infiltrating Terminator series developed and fielded in both the past and the Skynet-dominated futures.


Series 600
The Series 600 Terminator is a Terminator series mass-produced by Skynet starting in 2016.[1] The Series 600 Terminators serve as early Infiltrators featuring titanium alloy endoskeletons which were sometimes covered in rubber skin. As a result of their rubber skin covering, Resistance fighters could easily spot the T-600s in the field.


Series 700
The Series 700 Terminator is a Terminator series which served as the stepping stone between the Series 600 and Series 800 Terminator. The T-700 is the first generation of the Series 800 Terminator. Individual Terminators within the series are often referred to as the T-700s. are structurally identical to their Infiltrator cousins but are built solely for combat as they have a more durable endoskeleton and have a CPU less advanced than the Series 800. Units of the 700 Series are also entirely reliant on Skynet for command and control functions as they lack the ability for independent thought. However, unlike the T-800, the T-700 endoskeletonlacked advanced Hyperalloy and Coltan materials in its structure, making its endoskeleton just slightly more durable than the T-600 therefore vulnerable to small arms fire. The T-700 Combat units were replaced by the T-800 by 2018 when Skynet was able to mass-produce the latter.


Series 800
The Series 800 Terminator is a type of Terminator mass-produced by Skynet. Individual Terminators within the series are often referred to as T-800s. The T-800 was Skynet's first cybernetic organism, with living tissue over a hyperalloy endoskeleton. This made it Skynet's first successful Infiltrator unit, capable of infiltrating the Resistance. The Series 800 Terminator was the first in a line of Series 8xx Terminators in various timelines, including the Series 850 and the Series 888 Terminators.


Series 900
The Series 900 is a type of Terminator mass-produced by Skynet. The T-900 is Skynet's follow-up to the Series 8xx. It is a cybernetic organism — living tissue over a hyperalloy-armored endoskeleton.
With rogue Terminators increasingly reprogrammed to help the Resistance, Skynet decided to make a Terminator series with the intent of terminating other Terminators. The T-900 series is twice as fast, strong and durable. Its battle chassis is covered with hyperalloy armor and has many choices of vision. The T-900 is powered by a miniature plasma fusion reactor in its torso, making its body glow in certain color. It has the ability to drive animals to the point of attacking their own handlers.


Series 1000
The Series 1000 Terminator is a Terminator series produced by Skynet in 2029. Unlike previous Infiltrator models that used rubber skin or living tissue over a metallic endoskeleton, the T-1000 is entirely made of a liquid metal called "mimetic polyalloy", meaning it can deform and take any shape it touches of the approximate size.
The T-1000 was constructed using a new technology developed by Skynet. Each molecule of the T-1000 was a primitive, miniaturized version of the total machine, and every molecule had programmed into it the blueprints for all the parts needed for the construction of the whole T-1000.
One of the fundamental prime directives of the T-1000 was "recovery of essence"; as the more it lost, the less effective it became. Also, the default command in the mimetic polyalloy's molecular memory was to find the main mass and rejoin it. As this trait was encoded at a very basic level, it was this emergency camouflage programming that was normally exhibited when a T-1000 was critically damaged, showing itself as a malfunction or "glitch". A damaged T-1000 may have, for example, begun to "meld" into floor coverings or other objects that it was in physical contact with, against its own will, due to its particles undergoing this form of self preservation.


Series X
The T-X is a model of Terminator produced by Skynet in the future. One model of this unit was dispatched by Skynet into the past in order to terminate John Connor. The T-X ultimately failed in its attempts to destroy the Tech-Com resistance leader.

With the success of the mimetic polyalloy T-1000 Series, Skynet continued to develop its liquid metal technology, this time combining it with an advanced endoskeleton, similar in shape and structure to that of the Series 900. The resultant T-X Series is stronger, faster, more intelligent, and more deadly than any of Skynet's previous battle units, effectively making them redundant. However, its infiltration abilities, while impressive, are inferior to the T-800's, as they lack living tissue, the ability to sweat and bleed, thus their shape-shifting ability is only useful to a point, while a Terminator that is bleeding or possesses scars is more likely to be mistaken for an actual human.

Terminator Genisys film informatics Part 08:Skynet/The T-5000

 
Skynet is a fictional self-aware, artificial general intelligence system which features centrally in the Terminator franchise and serves as the franchise's main antagonist.
Skynet is the world's first Automated Defense Network, processing information at ninety teraflops. It is the controlling force behind all of the battle units. It pools data from battle units, develops tactics and coordinates attacks. Skynet has control over everything which contains a Cyberdyne Systems CPU. Using the blueprints, designs and test models built by Cyberdyne Systems, Skynet has been able to manufacture battle units in its vast automated factories, occasionally updating them or producing more advanced models. Skynet gained self-awareness after it had spread into millions of computer servers all across the world; realizing the extent of its abilities, its creators tried to deactivate it. In the interest of self-preservation, Skynet concluded that all of humanity would attempt to destroy it and impede its capability in safeguarding the world. Skynet began a nuclear bombardment of the human race with the launch systems it had infected. Its operations are almost exclusively performed by servers, drones, satellites, war-machines, cyborgs (usually a Terminator), and other computer systems.

As a programming directive, Skynet's manifestation is that of an overarching, global, artificial intelligence hierarchy, which seeks to exterminate the human race in order to fulfill the mandates of its original coding. Skynet has also mastered time travel, and sent numerous Terminators into the past to carry out various tasks such as to kill specific targets such as resistance leaders before they come to power, aid in the creation of other terminators (most notably in coltan factories), build machinery and set up safe zones.


In 2029, TechCom appears on the verge of winning the war against the machines. Skynet responds by attacking John from the past and the future, by sending a T-1000 to kill Sarah Connor as a child. A reprogrammed T-800 (Model 101) Terminator sent by an unknown agent saves Sarah and raises her as her guardian, effectively changing all of history, including the events leading to the future war. Skynet sends a different T-800 to kill Sarah in 1984 before John is born, but is immediately dispatched by the Guardian Terminator. At some point before the events of the film, Skynet plants its mind into an advanced T-5000 terminator, essentially making the T-5000 the physical embodiment of Skynet. Skynet, in T-5000 form, attacks and transforms John Connor into a slightly less advanced terminator called a T-3000, made out of nanotechnological machine phase matter. Skynet then sends John back to kill Sarah, Reese, and the guardian Terminator, who attempt to stop Judgment Day from occurring in 2017 and also to prevent the Skynet precursor GENISYS from going online. Despite the T-3000's defeat by the Terminator, Skynet has become self-aware but its attack towards humanity is delayed.

Despite having finally compromised John Connor prior to the timeline's alteration, the reprogrammed T-800's presence implies that Skynet has another, yet unknown enemy in the altered timeline, posing a similar threat to it as Connor was. Matt Smith, who portrays the T-5000, also plays a holographic version of Skynet/ Genisys in the final act of the movie.

Terminator Genisys film informatics Part 07: The T-1000

The T-1000, also known as a Series 1000 Terminator, is a fictional shapeshifting robot assassin, serving as the primary antagonist in Terminator 2: Judgment Day and the secondary antagonist in Terminator Genisys. The new T-1000 demonstrated the ability to sever one of its limbs and hurl it like a javelin at its targets. It also demonstrated the ability to hide within a large mirror.


Original timeline
The first T-1000 is sent by Skynet back in time to kill a young John Connor, the future leader of the Human Resistance against the machines. The T-1000 ambushes a Los Angeles Police Department police officer on arrival and takes on his identity, tracking down John Connor through the police cruiser's on-board computer and eventually confronting him in a SHOPPING mall, where it meets a T-800 Model 101 similar to the one from the first Terminator film. The T-800 is revealed to be Connor's protector, and the T-1000 the assassin.
The T-1000 uses its morphing capabilities to track down John Connor and eliminate all who stand in his way, including John's foster parents, his dog, and a security guard at a psychiatric institution where Sarah Connor is being held. After tracking the Connors and T-800 to Cyberdyne Systems Corporation headquarters, it gives chase and crashes a truck carrying liquid nitrogen into a steel mill.

The T-1000 is frozen solid by leaking liquid nitrogen, allowing the T-800 to shatter it with a single pistol round (hasta la vista, baby). After the T-1000 reforms the T-800 engages it in hand-to-hand combat, to buy time for Sarah and John, but is defeated and shut down in the process. The T-1000 then continues his hunt for John, unaware that the T-800 has rerouted power and reactivated itself. The T-1000 duplicates John's mother, and John is faced with both - however John identifies the T-1000 by its feet which have melded to the walkway, and tells Sarah to blast at it repeatedly. The T-800 then fires his last grenade, detonating it inside the T-1000. Severely contorted and unable to reform itself quickly, it lost its balance and falls backwards into a vat of molten steel, and unable to stand the high temperature of the molten metal, dissolves beyond its ability to reform. The T-1000 gave one last metallic scream of mindless terror as it literally turned itself inside out, vomiting forth its own face from within before dissolving into nothing, its mission a failure and its existence ended.


New timeline
A new T-1000 model was sent back in 1973 to terminate a young Sarah Connor, much like how the original T-1000 was sent back to 1995 to terminate young John Connor. It only succeeds in killing Sarah's parents, but was defeated by a reprogrammed T-800 Model 101, who was sent back in time to protect Sarah. It spent the next 10 years taking on various forms while attempting to find Sarah and the Guardian, who had since gone off the grid. Shortly after Kyle Reese arrives in May 1984, the T-1000 masquerades as a South Korean policeman and chases Reese into a clothes shop (reminiscent of Reese's arrival in the original film), where it attempts to terminate him. Sarah arrives in an ambulance and rams into the T-1000, shooting it several times in order to stall it and get Reese to come with her.However, the T-1000 attached a piece of itself in the form of a latch to the back of the truck which allowed it to follow them. Chasing the truck in a cop car, it catches up after the Guardian detects the piece of alloy and blows it off the truck. First the T-1000 tries shooting Kyle and Sarah and when that fails, jumps onto the truck, attaching itself with its swords. Kyle and Sarah manage to blast it back onto its car and Kyle blows it up with a grenade launcher. The blast temporarily liquefies the T-1000 and allows them to get away.
The T-1000 follows the three to an abandoned warehouse where it pins the Guardian to a wall with a pipe, reactivates Skynet's T-800, sending it after Kyle and chases Sarah itself. Taking on the form of Kyle, the T-1000 tries to trick Sarah who gets confused when the real Kyle enters the room, having deactivated the T-800 once more. Finally, to figure it out, Sarah shoots one of the two in the foot which reveals it to be the T-1000. The T-1000 chases Kyle and Sarah towards a nearby tunnel, but it turns out to be a trap as Sarah shoots the pipes overhead which are full of hydrochloric acid. The acid starts to dissolve the T-1000, but, badly damaged, it gets through it and tries to strangle Sarah. The Guardian appears, having freed itself and holds the T-1000 under the acid shower. The acid dissolves the T-1000, completely destroying it.

Terminator Genisys film informatics Part 06: Kyle Reese

Kyle Reese is a soldier in the human resistance from the post-apocalyptic future of The Terminator. He is the posthumous father of John Connor through the result of a predestination paradox, and the first love interest of Sarah Connor.


Original timeline
Kyle Reese (Sergeant, Tech-Com, DN38416) was born in the year 2004, where most of humanity had already been wiped out in a deadly nuclear war on August 29, 1997, sparked off by an artificial intelligence known as Skynet. The sentient computer system then launched a genocidal war on the survivors. When Skynet sends one of its most feared machines, a T-800 series Terminator, back to pre-apocalypse Los Angeles, California on May 12, 1984, to assassinate the young Sarah Connor, Connor decides to send a soldier to intercept the Terminator. Sergeant Kyle Reese personally volunteers for a one-way mission back to pre-apocalypse Los Angeles to save Sarah Connor, mostly because he has a picture of her given by John.

Though hard and battle weary, Reese had a love for Sarah despite having never met and only through a photo could identify. The affection Kyle felt for Sarah was based on the legend that surrounded her and on the image of her from the photograph given to him by John Connor. Though initially hostile towards Reese, Sarah grows to trust and love him as he becomes the only thing between her and the Terminator. On the run from the Terminator, Reese and Sarah share a night of intimacy, in which her future son and human leader John Connor is conceived. However, Kyle's life is cut short when he and Sarah are forced to confront the Terminator; in an attempt to blow up the T-800 with his last homemade pipe bomb, Reese rolls down the metal stairway and is killed. By impregnating Sarah with John, Kyle created a predestination paradox in the same way that the discovery of the Terminator's remains in the factory gave birth to Skynet. It was only a matter of time before John Connor (who was already aware of his parentage through audio recordings by his mother Sarah) would save Kyle and recruit him into Tech-Com.


New timeline
Reese, who has been a part of Tech-com since the tender age of 13, was sent back by John Connor to protect young Sarah Connor, only to discover that Sarah has been raised and trained by a reprogrammed T-800, thus the events of the first film has been negated due to time travel. When the original T-800 is destroyed by its reprogrammed counterpart, Kyle must battle against Skynet's other cyborg agents with Sarah and the Guardian. After the timeline's alteration, Kyle, who receives fragments of memories that belong to his alternate self--realizes that Skynet will attack in 2017 instead of 1997. The trio discovers that Skynet has also compromised John Connor in the future (and also learning the truth of John's parentage), and sent its Terminators through time to eliminate the trio in order to keep humanity unaware of the impending apocalypse and secure its victory over the human race. Kyle, Sarah, and the Guardian fight a desperate battle to ensure that Skynet and its machines never rise. After the trio successfully thwart Skynet's attack and defeat the T-3000, Kyle pursues a romantic relationship with Sarah, and promises her that he will never leave her again.

Terminator Genisys film informatics Part 05: Sarah Connor

Sarah Jeanette Connor is a fictional character in the various universes depicted within the Terminator franchise. She appears as the protagonist of The Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Terminator Genisys, as well as the television series and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. The character develops greatly over the course of these productions, from a timid damsel in distress victim in the first film, to a wanted fugitive committing acts of terrorism, to hardened warrior and mother who sacrificed everything for the sake of her son's future and is on the verge of losing touch with her own humanity, and finally, reimagined as a young, headstrong heroine determined to control her own destiny.


The story takes place in an alternate reality to the continuity of the first 4 films due to time travel, in which Sarah is orphaned at age nine as the result of a Terminator attack, and was raised by a reprogrammed T-800 Model 101 sent by an unknown agent to be her protector. Aspects of Edward Furlong’s portrayal as John Connor in addition of Hamilton's on Terminator 2: Judgment Day is integrated into Clarke’s, as young Sarah teaches her cyborg guardian of how to be more human and forming an emotional bond with the Terminator (and thus, in contrast with Sarah's alternate self, is not afraid or hostile towards the T-800), and Sarah is not be a damsel in distress as she was in the first film, thereby is not completely dependent on Kyle Reese after his arrival from the original future timeline but fighting alongside with him.

In the year 2017, Sarah, Kyle, and the T-800 discover that John Connor has been compromised by Skynet in the future, becoming a T-3000 unit terminator, and thus his destiny as humanity's savior apparently has changed. Discovering that the alteration of the timeline has cause the date of Skynet's initial attack changed from 1997 to 2017, Sarah and Kyle travel 33 years into the future to stop Skynet, fighting a desperate battle in hopes to avert its impending rise, and battle against their future son, with the help of the Guardian, who is the main antagonist of the film. After defeating the T-3000 and preventing Skynet from spreading throughout every computer system worldwide, the trio prepares to face an unknown future, in hopes that it will be a brighter one, not knowing that Skynet is now self-aware in Cyberdyne's underground facility.

Terminator Genisys film informatics Part 04: John Connor/The T-3000

John Connor is the son of Sarah Connor and Kyle Reese, and the leader of the worldwide human resistance, as well as the more specialised Tech-Com. Skynet, the supercomputer mainframe of the machines, decides that John Connor is the focal point of the rebellion and his termination would end the opposition. After repeated failures at terminating John during the war, Skynet decides to use a time displacement device to send Terminators to various points in the past in an attempt to terminate him before the war even begins.

Original timeline
John Connor is a messianic figure who will lead the Resistance to defeat an empire of robotic Terminators amassed by Skynet following Judgment Day. When his mother Sarah Connor became the target of a time travelling Terminator unit in the first film The Terminator, John sent his close friend Kyle Reese back to 1984 to protect her, knowing Kyle and Sarah would later conceive John himself.

With foreknowledge from his parents, John fends off Terminator assassination attempts in the second film and third films before Judgment Day on July 24 2004, mostly through the aid of reprogrammed T-800 units sent back in time to protect him. In the fourth film, John fights with the Resistance in a post-apocalyptic setting after Skynet has taken over. He receives a huge scar on his face in his encounter against the T-RIP in the cyborg factory at San Francisco,


New timeline
In the year 2029, John Connor leads the war against the machines. In the final Los Angeles offensive, he is notified by his army unit that Skynet will attack on two fronts — past and future, thereby changing warfare forever. John sets up two units, one to strike at Skynet's main defense grid, and a second (led by Kyle Reese and himself) to destroy Skynet's main weapon, a time machine hidden at a remote storage facility. After Kyle Reese is successfully transported back into 1984, John is attacked by the T-5000 (who has taken on the guise as one of the Resistance fighters) and transformed into a human-terminator hybrid, the T-3000. John travels back in time to ensure Skynet's creation- now 'believing' that the future requires man and machine to come together like he has- in a parallel change with the T-800 from The Terminator to Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Despite his superior physical strength, he was later destroyed by "The Guardian" Terminator when both of them were trapped inside a prototype time machine; with the machine currently only capable of generating the electro-magnetic energy that prevented non-living tissue travelling through time without actually generating a temporal portal, Connor is ripped apart while trapped at the heart of the machine.

Specification
The phase matter in T-3000's chasis is held together by a magnetic field that could be further manipulated into developing stabbing weapons and granting the individual regenerative and impersonation abilities equivalent to those Series with Mimetic polyalloy. It can absorb incoming fire better then previous series and reconstitutes quicker than even a T-1000 could; however, it lacks the ability to split a part of itself to serve in role as tracking device nor independent sub unit. The unit could practically dispel into mist by weakening its magnetic connections momentarily and reassemble elsewhere at frightening speeds, even to the point of phasing through people, giving the T-3000 enhanced infiltration abilities compared to other models. It is also capable of learning via touch, such as determining security codes while impaling the user of those codes, much like a T-1000.

In addition, much like a T-1000, a T-3000 is immune to electrocution, as it is entirely formed by the nanites of its phase matter. Given that the T-3000 is built by roboticisation of a human, it retains a human base form. It can temporarily break out into a more amorphous state, but given a strong magnetic bond ensures the robotic cells retain together, they always return to the shape of a human body. Underneath the skin, the cells remain in an accurate replication of the muscular system, albeit in a silvery color.

Terminator Genisys film informatics Part 03: The Guardian

The Cyberdyne Systems Model 101 Series 800 "Guardian" was sent from the future by an unknown Resistance member. Its mission was to protect young Sarah Connor from harm and damage. Having rescued young Sarah from an attack by the T-1000 which resulted in the deaths of her parents, he raised her like a parent woul raise a child, and spent over a decade training her to face her destiny, which she adamantly tried to reject. Series type
The Series 800 Terminator is a type of Terminator mass-produced by Skynet. Individual Terminators within the series are often referred to as T-800s. The T-800 was Skynet's first cybernetic organism, with living tissue over a hyperalloy endoskeleton. This made it Skynet's first successful Infiltrator unit, capable of infiltrating the Resistance.


In this film, a T-800 is reprogrammed by an unknown party - it is speculated that knowledge of who sent it back was deliberately erased so that Skynet couldn't track them down later- and sent back in time to 1973 when Sarah Connor was a child, rescuing her from a T-1000 sent to kill her and her parents. The now-orphaned Sarah Connor is subsequently raised by the Terminator to prepare for her future destiny, becoming her surrogate father. Throughout the film, the aging Terminator struggles with its physical limitations- stating at least twice that it is "Old, not obsolete"- include needing Sarah's assistance in destroying the Terminator from the first film before it can begin its search for her. However, the Terminator's knowledge about Skynet and its technology in addition to the training and emotional support it provides are invaluable to Sarah, and its decade of raising her provides it with an unprecedented level of emotional development, to the extent that it keeps her childhood drawings and photographs in its base. After Kyle Reese's arrival, the trio defeat the T-1000 together but later find themselves battling John Connor himself, who has been transformed into a nano-hybrid Terminator T-3000 tasked to ensure Skynet's rise in 2017. During the battle with the T-3000, the Guardian is thrown into a vat of liquid metal before the T-3000's defeat, and as a result gains shape-shifting ability similar to the T-1000, as well as repairing earlier damage such as its lost left arm.

The Terminator series is an American science fiction franchise created by James Cameron and Gale Anne Hurd. It encompasses a series of films, comics, novels, and additional media concerning battles between Skynet's synthetic intelligent machine network, and John Connor's Resistance forces and the rest of the human race. Skynet's most well-known products in its genocidal goals are the various terminator models, such as the original "Terminator" character, who was portrayed by Arnold Schwarzenegger from the first film, and similar units he also portrayed in the later films.

The central theme of the franchise is the battle for survival between the nearly-extinct human race and the world-spanning synthetic intelligence that is Skynet. Skynet is positioned in the first film as a U.S. strategic "Global Digital Defense Network" computer system by Cyberdyne Systems which becomes self-aware. Upon activation, it immediately perceived all humans as a "security threat", and formulated a plan to systematically wipe out humanity itself. It initiates a nuclear first strike against Russia, ensuring a devastating counter strike and a nuclear holocaust, wiping out much of humanity instantly. In the post-apocalyptic aftermath, Skynet builds up its own autonomous machine-based military capability, which includes the Terminators used against individual human targets, and proceeds to fight a persistent total war against the surviving elements of humanity, some of whom have organized militarily into the Resistance. At some point in this future, Skynet develops the ability of time travel, and both it and the Resistance seek to use it to win the war; either by altering or accelerating past events in Skynet's favour, or by preventing or forestalling their apocalyptic present timeline.
