Veteran Hong Kong comedian and actress Lydia Sum, best recognised for her curled-up hairstyle, big glasses, plump physique and cheerful personality, had passed on at 8.40 am today, at the age of 60. Cause of death was due to liver cancer resulted from a prolonged bout of complications related to a cholecystectomy done in 2002. She leaves behind a young daughter Joyce Cheng, as well as her ex-husband, popular HK actor Adam Cheng.
She once came here to act as the main lead for her very first English-speaking show, the Singaporean sitcom titled "Living With Lydia" (which ran for 4 seasons). Her role as Lydia Lum (an obvious loose adaptation of her real persona) in that sitcom earned her "Best Comedy Performance by an Actress" award at the 2003 Asian Television Awards. Somehow her death reminds me too much of Anita Mui, who died 5 years ago after a long battle with cancer.
Goodbye, Lydia. You have brought much joy and happiness into our lives. I will miss your smiling face and trademark laughter. My prayers go out to your loved ones. You will always remain in our hearts. :-(
