This happened on Wednesday night...
After knocking off from work at 7 pm, I took a bus to Clarke Quay region... by the time I reached Block C Cannery at 7.30 pm, I saw a rather long queue (approx 300 people), but joined in nevertheless. My main purpose of going for the tribute party (one of about 5 tribute shows in this week) was never to get the exclusive poster (I already got plenty of MJ pics), but to simply be part of the party!! :-)
Yeah anyway, admission for the Black or White Tribute show at ZIRCA is 100% free for everyone aged 18 and above, even those who may not be dressed in black or white. The moment I got into the place, "In The Closet" was being played in full-blast. This is the list of songs played between 2045 to 2130 hrs...
- In The Closet (from Dangerous)
- Another Part of Me (from Bad)
- P.Y.T. (from Thrller)
- Wanna Be Starting Something (from Thriller)
- State of Shock (from Victory)
- Ben (from Forever Michael)
- Got To Be There (from album of same name)
- Can You Feel It (from Triumph)
- The Girl Is Mine (from Thriller)
- You Rock My World (from Invincible)
- Dangerous (from Dangerous, duh!)
- Rock With You (from Off The Wall)
Brian Richmond aka George Pereira was the one to kick off the event. When he talked about the Jackson 5 hits, he sounded like he was in character as George Pereira on Red Thread!! :-p
Performances by local band Yello Tinted... with appearances by Wynne Sandoshjam, Vanessa Fernandez and DJ Young Leong. Oh yeah, did I forget to tell you that the female lead singer looked a lot like Janet Jackson? :-)
- You Are Not Alone featuring Wynne Sandosham
- Man In The Mirror featuring Wynne Sandosham
- The Way You Make Me Feel
- Wanna Be Starting Something
- Don't Stp Til You Get Enough
- Smooth Criminal
- Say Say Say
- Black or White featuring Vanessa Fernandez
Music videos presented by Audrey Ng and Clarissa Monteiro were as follows...
- the full 13-minute Thriller music video directed by John Landis
- the iconic Beat It video made in 1983
- the Bad music video made in 1987... MJ's face-off with then-unknown Wesley Snipes
- MJ's unforgettable Billie Jean performance during Motown 25 on March 1983... yes, the one where he did the moonwalk for the very first time!! :-D
And yes, there was obviously a slew of about 6 MJ Impersonators (2 with short hair and looking a bit like Prince) who came out to dance to some of MJ's greatest songs. Oddly enough, the MJ Impersonator J Chandran whom I saw at Heartland Mall last June wasn't present... but I was glad to see V Prakash there.
For game sessions, a tune is being played and people have to say MJ's trademark "AAOWW!!" if they know the answer. Two girls got up on stage to attempt the moonwalk, and 3 MJ fans (a guy, a girl, and a sheer weirdo) did whatever they did within 1 minute of Billie Jean being played.
About a quarter of the patrons (myself included) left ZIRCA at 11 pm when Vanessa was about to start an acapella session of MJ's Greatest Hits. I obviously wouldn't want to stay for the whole thing. I went home with my feet feeling very sore from all that standing.
