James Rhodes puts on the Mark II armor to stop Tony Stark from putting his party guests at risk with the Mark IV armor. After a fierce brawl that destroyed most of Stark's mansion, Rhodes flies back to the airbase and delivers the Mark II armor to the US Air Force. With the aid of Stark's competitor Justin Hammer, the Mark II is upgraded into the "JRXL-1000 Variable Threat Response Battle Suit" or "War Machine", a solar charged carbon-composite-based external plating armor which provided its user with superhuman-level strength and durability as well as utilizing laser guided munitions. The armor is later taken for a demonstration at the Stark Expo with Rhodes as its pilot. However his armor was under the control of Ivan Vanko, and Rhodes was forced to fight Stark against his will. The War Machine software was rebooted by Natasha Romanoff, enabling Rhodes to regain control over his armor. Rhodes then teamed with Stark to fight against Hammer's unmanned drones and Ivan Vanko himself.
In addition to the weapons upgrade received from Hammer, the suit itself contains all the tech that Tony created for the early Iron Man armors. Powerful repulsors, a self-contained life-support system and non-weapons grade repulsors used in flight, allowed the armor to reach incredible speeds. Moreover, the Arc Reactor that powers the War Machine armor is capable of generating at least eight gigajoules of energy, enough energy to compete with Iron Man's Mark VI armor. Only a fraction of this energy is required to power the Mark II exoskeletal structure.
