My thoughts on Miss S'pore World, and screwed up wins

I personally feel that Ris Low should not have won Miss Singapore World 2009 title. So what if she had recovered from a high fever days before! I felt she won it mostly due to the sheer manipulation of the judges who thought that her question on "money can buy power" was a sensible one. Power can NEVER be "purchased" through monetary means, it has to be EARNED through hard work and determination, not to forget respect from peers.

Also, I felt that Ris should never bother to join New Face 2009 if she's in the midst of a major beauty pageant, the New Face batch is meant as a "path of baptism" for part-time models who want to venture into something bigger (like acting or taking part in pageants like MSU or MSW, to name a few). Not to forget that Ris voluntarily stepped down from Miss Earth Singapore finals to focus on MSW. Now that Ris had unexpectedly won the MSW title, she had to step down from New Face batch and make way to a more worthy replacement. It would be most strange to have a beauty pageant winner as part of this year's New Face batch, don't you think so? Goes to show how greedy Ris can be, even if she's not fully aware of it...

Speaking about New Face finalists, it was perhaps most unfortunate that TNP New Face 2007 alumnus Rachel Kum had to win Miss Singapore Universe 2009 crown in the midst of controversial reports around her. Rumors about her being added in the mix halfway through without the need to go for certain auditions and segments. First we had Rachel, then Ris, who next?

If I have to name the RIGHTFUL winner of MSW 2009, it should be Oxy Ong. I think her answer to the question on the problems that teens are facing today is the most sensible IMO (not sure about the other contestants' questions though). According to my friend who was present at the finals that night, Oxy stated that teens nowadays like to spend their money on material stuff such as branded goods or clothes (just look at the teenage girls baring their legs and butts in microshorts in town!! Shameless xiah), and that they should learn to manage their expenses instead of wasting their own lives. I felt this is very true indeed, esp since I had come across such a person who only cares about boosting his ego and showing off the unnecessary stuff he had bought for the sake of gaining attention and gaining more enemies in the process. If you're a regular MediaCorp fan like myself, you'd probably know very well which abomination I'm referring to... :-X

Could this be the year of unworthy winners to come? We already had a little brat who won Campus Superstar season 3 due to his cute looks rather than by his voice (I shall never mention his name, nor do I ever wish to see him in person again), followed by Rachel Kum and Ris Low as mentioned above. We did have a unexpected winner during one of the past few Miss Singapore Universe contests, but I shan't mention who; however, we did have a girl with a very poor grasp on English who made it to the Final 5 of MSW 2001 in spite of giving a lacklustre question to a rather strange question, and then got totally stumped during the final Q n A session (anyone remember Coco?).

And what would the whole of Singapore feel if Victor Tang were to win the solo category of "Live the Dream" instead of Fendi 2 years ago, and performed at the 2008 Countdown alongside more seasoned performers? Man, he would have been pelted with eggs!!

As far as we all know, the rules of the game are never fair when it comes to singing competitions or beauty pageants...
speaking about which, it is most unfortunate that Paula Abdul has decided to quit as judge of American Idol series, after reports on not being offred a new contract. This latest news obviously caused great sadness to Ryan Seacrest, the AI alumni and everyone else who had followed the show faithfully for the past 8 years. AI would never be the same without the nice judge...

(Damnit, Blogger has screwed up yet again... about time I shift to a better domain?)

Like I said, unfairness exists everywhere. Even sometimes, the person with insensible answers get the credits as compared to the sensible ones.

Money can never be used for power. If it's true, then it'll will turn into corruption, as money is the root of evil......

Oxy said to me in response to the email I sent to her, "Well at times, we can't control some of the things that come along."

Yeap, she's right. Things like these are beyond control. So once the winner is decided, there's no way to undo the competition. Other than that, did she say anything else?

Too bad this is Blogspot. If it is Facebook, I would "like" your post. =)

I saw the picture of Oxy Ong in citynews.sg. She's lovely. =)
