Too much drilling and hammering upstairs during the morning... seems like there's some renovation going on for the next few days... guess I'll haf to buy a new pair of earplugs... this noise is a lot worse than the screams of the fans at any Singapore Idol spectacular.

But anyway, here's the latest shocker on the latest discovery on Taufik's Singapore Idol anthem...

In 2004, Singapore Idol 1 was hot with fresh-faced singers like Olinda Cho, Daphne Khoo, Sylvester Sim and Taufik Batisah, not to forget the final match between Taufik and Sylvester held at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on 1st December 2004, with them singing the 'especially written song' for the Singapore Idol 1 winner... "I Dream".

However, something is wrong now. Fast forward to September 2006... just days after the Singapore Idol season 2 Final Showdown between Jonathan Leong and Hady Mirza.

"I Dream", the song popularized by Taufik after he was crowned the champion of Singapore Idol in 2004 now casts doubt on its originality because the song is very similar to the one sung by Grammy winner, Leanne Rimes in 2001.The song that Taufik performed - including the lyrics and rhythm - is so closely similar to LeAnn's at the World Sports Award 2001 - also titled I Dream. The video of LeAnn's performance was uploaded about two weeks ago on YouTube. The enraged netizens and Idol fans in general now question Mediacorp's claim that Michael Fallon had written the song especially for the winner of Singapore Idol. That song was, after all, meant for the winner of the first Singapore Idol in 2004.Taufik's first album, Blessings, which also included I Dream, created history when it reached double platinum within 20 days of its' release when it sold more than 30,000 units here. When Berita Harian posed the question of the originality of the song to MediaCorp's spokesperson, Miss Serene Foo, she said she will get feedback from SonyBMG Music before making any comments."Because this question came late, it's not realistic for us to give an answer today (yesterday, 06 Oct 06)," she said. Sony BMG Music was the company that produced Blessings. When contacted yesterday, Sony BMG Music spokesperson, Mr. Danny Wong said his side will scrutinize the allegation. Taufik's manager said that if the allegation is true, her side will be very disappointed.

But if u come to think abt it, "I Dream" wasnt the only non-original song... "Evergreen" which was sung by Pop Idol 2002 winner Will Young (who dabbled wif acting in the recent R-rated flick "Mrs Henderson Presents") and "Flying Without Wings" which was sung by American Idol 2 winner Ruben Studdard were both previously recorded by Irish boyband Westlife.

The Westlife version of "Evergreen" debuted at Number 3 in the UK charts, whereas Will Young's version went straight to the number one spot in the UK Singles Chart and stayed there for three consecutive weeks, only to be knocked off the top spot by Gareth Gates' debut single, "Unchained Melody". It became the fastest-selling debut in UK chart history, selling 403,027 copies on its day of release. It went on to sell over 1.7 million copies and in the official list of the all-time best-selling singles in the UK issued later that year, it appeared 11th. (honestly speaking, I prefer Westlife's version... ok so i think Will did quite well wif that song, tho he really sounded and behaved like a faggot thru most of the video).

As for "Flying Without Wings", it was first made famous by Irish boy band Westlife, for whom it became a number one hit on the UK Singles Chart in 1999. It was fatured in Westlife's self-titled debut album which was released on November 1999, and the album went straight to Number 1. It was their third, and one of their biggest selling number ones to date. It also featured on Pokémon: The Movie 2000, though being the very last song during the end credits. It is also a duet with Mexican singer, Christian Castro. It then became a 2003 single by American Idol season 2 finalist and eventual winner Ruben Studdard. It was released simultaneously with "This is the Night" by rival contestant Clay Aiken, and opened at number 2 in the Billboard Hot 100, while "This is the Night" took the top slot. Seems like Westlife fared a lot better wif this one, esp since they include it in ALL of their tour performances... the most recent one being the Face To Face Tour which happened just last month (and yep, I was tehre of course). :-)

And yes indeed I was equally shocked upon seeing the Youtube video of LeAnn Rimes singing "I Dream". But anyway... while this maater is still in the midst of being debated upon, here are three more YouTube videos for u to enjoy... ;-)
