Stardust Semi-finals

This was how the Stardust semi-finals (not the movie starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Claire Danes) on Friday went...

I left the house at around 1 pm, took a bus to Bugis (another hot babe sat next to me!) and had my lunch at BK. After which I took a train to Clementi and went on a rather absurd journey to NUS (which I shan’t go into detail)… I managed to locate the Central Library Forum at 5 pm, and there was da stage for the Stardust Finals. And yes, Jasmine was there already!! The moment she saw me, I just froze and couldn’t stop blushing! Still as cute and sweet as ever! At abt 5.50 pm, Uncle Joe and family arrived, as did his church friends. Gerald and Joshua came soon after. So good to see Grace and Joan again… nearly wanted to pinch the xiao mei mei’s cheeks :-p

First off was the solo category, the more interesting part. Imagine my surprise when I found out that Jay Lim (another SI finalist!) was one of the judges! There were 24 solo contestants in all. Jasmine was second last. Some of them sang really well, a few of them were just too pitchy, and some are just too plain and forgettable.

S01 Paige Gan Min was quite sweet in terms of looks and voice, but she needed to gain more weight.

S02 Lester Teo was kinda pitchy, reminded me a little of that horrid LTD finalist Victor Khoo.

S03 Krystal Kuah was one of the stronger contenders, displaying a powerful voice for Alicia Keys' "If I Ain't Got You".

S04 Inch Chua was damn cuuuute, strumming on guitar and singing Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back”. Yes, that song performed by Michael Jackson when he was still a kid, way before he mutated into a white woman in the 1990s.

S05 Natri sang a nearly pitch-perfect Chinese song!

S06 Jerome Mak... forgot name of song, but he did quite ok.

S07 Tai Jie Rou... quite a forgettable performance.

S08 Mao Meng Ying... sang a Chinese song, quite a safe one here.

S09 Natasha Theresa Gray... urgh, vocals sound way too 'forced'.

S10 Farhan Shah was just bland and horrid, much worse than S02. The moment he knelt down, I was going, "alright, that's it man".

S11 Tan Yan Rong was way too similar to Jasmine in terms of personality and looks, her voice was just as powerful too.

S12 Tao Jing’s dancing and skimpy outfit did little to conceal her mediocre singing. Too much like a lounge singer, really.

S13 Lincoln Luk sang a Chinese song while strumming on the guitar.

S14 Andrew Sophian Putra sang “Bridge Over Troubled Waters” while playing on the keyboards.

S15 Fiona Teo (a former FHM Girl Next Door finalist, I checked) had a figure as happening as the Mediacorp Princess of the same name. Performance quite ok too.

S16 Kelvin Ong charmed the audience away with “Moondance”.

S17 Tay Ke Xin, another sweetie, charmed her way into guys’ hearts with a Chinese song.

S18 Tay Yinxue displayed strong vocals, but totally screwed up the most important lyrics for “Against All Odds” (Phil Collins and Mariah Carey won’t be so pleased)!

S19 Joel Koh got the crowd clapping along to “Sweet Home Alabama”.

S20 Rohasliza growled her way into Evanescence’s “Call Me When You’re Sober”… her rock angst persona reminds me too much of SI 2 rocker chic Rahima Rahim (who had migrated to Malaysia along with whole family???).

S21 Chew Yue Yin... vocals were just as bad as her dress sense, she looked like she just woke up.

S22 Jasen Matthew Bell sang another Jackson 5 song “I’ll Be There” (again sung by MJ long before his bad karma days), and boy everyone liked it.

S23 is none other than Jasmine (finally!!), she sang a Chinese song! Hearing her powerful voice made me think back on the good ol’ SI days… sorry if I'm being rather biased in uploading more pics of Jas here, but she's the main reason why I went for the Stardust thingy... :-)

S24, last solo contestant was Shaiful Hakim, whose rendition of “She Will Be Loved” was nowhere as brilliant as the original sung by Adam Levine!

Then at 2005 hrs came the loud and draggy (and rather boring) Band category… 15 bands in all!! With the sounds of the drums and electric guitars threatening to ‘melt’ my brain, I decided to go to one corner and have a chat with Gerald, Joshua and Uncle Joe. For the next 1 hour or so, we chatted mostly about the other talent competitions and music careers. Here are some pictures I took during the band category (not all of them btw).

The band performance finally ended at around 2155 hrs… then came the results for both solo and group categories. Of course Jasmine advanced to the finals… but then I was a bit sad that some of the better singers failed to get in. Before I left the place, I managed to take picture with cutie Jasmine and her dad. Then I took Bus 151 all the way back home.

And oh, I just found out that SI 2 semi-finalist Meryl Joan Lee happened to be a student in NUS too!! I had absolutely no idea about that… but it's certainly not hard to recognize the doll-faced beauty (who's lost the baby fat liao), who was one of the committee members of the competition. :-p
